Cost per page is one division: the price of the cartridge divided by the number of pages it is rated for. The trap is that almost nobody reads the second number carefully, and the second number carries more fine print than the first. Here is what a page yield rating actually measures, what it deliberately leaves out, and how to turn published figures into a number that means something for your own printing.
What a page yield rating measures
Toner yields are declared against ISO test standards, and the standard for monochrome laser cartridges assumes roughly five percent coverage on a letter or A4 page. Five percent is a light business letter: a few paragraphs of text and some white space. It is not a page of tables, not a resume with a shaded header, and certainly not a slide printed edge to edge. Manufacturers publish the standard they used when they want the number to be comparable. Brother, for example, states that the super high yield replacement toner for the MFC-L8900CDW is rated at 6,500 pages against ISO/IEC 19798, which is the color test suite.
Two words do a lot of work in these ratings. The first is approximate, which appears on nearly every cartridge box and is not a hedge you can argue with. The second is up to, which sets a ceiling rather than an expectation. Both are honest labels for a measurement taken on a reference document that is unlikely to resemble yours.
It helps to picture what five percent coverage looks like on paper. Think of a short letter: a date line, four or five paragraphs of body text, a signature block, and generous margins all round. Now picture the documents you actually print. A spreadsheet with gridlines and shaded header rows, a PDF invoice with a logo, a page of code with syntax highlighting, or anything with a table border running down both sides is heavier than the reference page, sometimes by a factor of two or three. Your real yield falls in proportion, and that is not a defect in the cartridge. It is the rating describing a different document from yours.
This is also why yields are only comparable when the same standard sits behind them. A mono cartridge rated under the monochrome standard and a color cartridge rated under the color standard were measured with different test files, so the two numbers are not interchangeable even when they appear in the same table. When a listing gives a yield with no standard named at all, the figure is still useful for comparing that manufacturer’s own cartridges to each other, and much weaker for comparing across brands.
What the catalog’s cartridges actually claim
Reading five ratings next to each other is the fastest way to see how wide the spread is inside one product class.

The 26A and the 206A sit at 3,100 and 1,350 pages respectively. If those two cartridges cost anything like the same money, the machines behind them have very different economics, and neither spec sheet on the printer itself will tell you that.
Three numbers people leave out of the math
The drum or imaging unit
On many laser designs the photoconductor is a separate replaceable part with its own life, and its cost has to be spread across pages the same way toner is. The MFC-L8900CDW ships with a DR431CL drum unit rated at approximately 30,000 pages. At the other end of the scale, the HP Color LaserJet Enterprise M751dn listing describes four preinstalled imaging drums rated at roughly 65,000 pages each. A drum with a 30,000 page life adds a real per page cost even though you touch it once every few years, and a machine that hides the drum inside the toner cartridge shifts that cost into a higher cartridge price instead. Neither approach is free.
Color pages are counted differently
A color laser has four supplies, and a page that uses any color at all draws down more than one of them. The MFC-L8900CDW box contains standard yield toner rated at 3,000 pages black and 1,800 pages color, which is the same machine giving two different page numbers depending on what you print. Any honest cost per page for a color device is therefore two numbers, not one, and the color number is the one that surprises people.
The cartridge in the box is often not the one you rebuy
Manufacturers frequently ship a reduced capacity supply with new hardware. The Xerox C410 listing is unusually direct about it and names preinstalled starter capacity print cartridges in the included components. That is useful disclosure, because a starter cartridge means your first replacement arrives sooner than the published yield of the full size cartridge would suggest. When a listing does not say, treat the included supply as unknown rather than assuming it is a full one.
Doing the arithmetic in a way that survives contact with reality
- Start with the replacement cartridge you will actually buy, not the one bundled with the machine.
- Divide by the rated yield, then add the drum cost per page if the drum is a separate part.
- For color devices, calculate a black page and a color page separately.
- Adjust upward for coverage. If your documents are heavier than a plain business letter, your real yield lands below the rating and no cartridge is at fault.
- Check pack counts before comparing prices. A two pack such as the TN660 looks expensive next to a single cartridge until you notice it carries about 5,200 pages of capacity.
Matching cartridges to machines
Yield only matters once the cartridge physically fits and the printer accepts it. The HP 26A listing names the LaserJet Pro MFP M426 series, which is the family that includes the HP LaserJet Pro M426fdw, so that pairing is stated rather than inferred. Cross referencing in that direction is the safe one: read the cartridge listing for the printer families it names, rather than reading a printer listing and guessing at cartridges. Model numbers in this space differ by a single letter across incompatible parts.
If you are working out what a machine will cost you before you buy it, the toner cartridge category is where the published yields live, and the laser printer category has the hardware those cartridges feed. Doing both halves of the reading before you commit is the difference between a cheap printer and a cheap page.
