Motherboard Form Factors Compared: ATX, Micro ATX and Mini ITX

Form factor is the one motherboard spec that decides your case, your cooler, your power supply and how many things you can plug in later. It is also the spec people pick last, usually after the case is already on the shelf. Working the other direction is easier.

The three sizes and what they actually measure

ATX, Micro ATX and Mini ITX are published dimensions with fixed mounting hole positions, not marketing tiers. A full size ATX board measures 305 by 244 mm. Micro ATX keeps the 244 mm width and cuts the length to 244 mm, so it is square. Mini ITX is 170 by 170 mm.

The mounting holes matter as much as the outline. The smaller standards reuse a subset of the ATX hole pattern, which is why a Micro ATX or Mini ITX board bolts into an ATX case without adapters. The reverse is not true. A case built only for Mini ITX has neither the room nor the standoffs for anything larger.

What you give up as the board shrinks

Expansion slots

ATX is the only size with room for a long stack of slots. A board like the ASUS ROG Strix Z790-A Gaming WiFi has the space for multiple PCIe slots plus a wide bank of M.2 sockets, and its listing reflects that with four M.2 slots. Micro ATX cuts the rear panel height in half, which caps the slot count at four and usually fewer once a graphics card covers one of them. Mini ITX gives you exactly one PCIe slot. If a graphics card goes in it, that is the end of the expansion conversation.

Before choosing a Mini ITX board, list every card you might ever want in the machine. A capture card, a sound card, a dedicated network card and a Wi-Fi card are four separate things competing for one slot.

Memory slots

Mini ITX boards almost always have two memory slots rather than four. That does not halve your capacity, because a two slot board can still take the largest modules available for its platform, but it does remove the option of adding two more sticks later. It also removes a common upgrade path, since filling all four slots on a four slot board is a way to double capacity without throwing away what you already own.

Micro ATX is inconsistent here. Some boards carry four slots and some carry two, and the listing does not always say clearly. The ASUS TUF Gaming B550M-PLUS and the GIGABYTE B650M AORUS Elite AX are both Micro ATX, and both sit in that middle ground where you need to read the manufacturer page rather than assume.

Rear ports and headers

The rear panel is a fixed height, so a smaller board has less of it. On Mini ITX the rear I/O is squeezed by the single slot bracket below it, and internal headers get placed wherever there is space, sometimes under where the graphics card sits. Compact boards can still be well equipped. The ASUS ROG Strix B760-I Gaming WiFi lists two M.2 slots and a USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 Type-C port on a 170 mm board, and the GIGABYTE X870I AORUS PRO ICE listing claims two M.2 slots, Wi-Fi 7 and 2.5 gigabit ethernet in the same footprint. Density costs money rather than capability.

The case is half the decision

Once the board size is set, the case sets three further limits that have nothing to do with the motherboard standard.

  • CPU cooler height. Small cases publish a maximum in millimeters. The JONSBO N2 listing specifies support for a 65 mm cooler, which rules out most tower coolers immediately and points you toward low profile designs such as the Noctua NH-L9i. Note that the NH-L9i listing specifies Intel LGA1200 and LGA115x mounting, so socket compatibility is a separate check from height.
  • Graphics card length. Cases publish a maximum in millimeters too, and it is often the first thing that blocks a small build.
  • Power supply form factor. Many compact cases take SFX rather than standard ATX power supplies. The JONSBO N2 listing specifies an SFX supply with a 150 mm maximum length. An ATX unit will not fit no matter how the cables are routed.

Compact cases like the darkFlash C275P are built around a Mini ITX board and inherit all three of those limits at once. Read the case spec sheet before the board spec sheet if space is your main constraint.

Small does not mean cheap

There is a common assumption that a smaller board is a budget board. It is often the opposite. Fitting a full chipset, two memory slots, two M.2 sockets, a wireless module and adequate power delivery into 170 by 170 mm requires more layers in the printed circuit board and more expensive components. Entry level boards are usually Micro ATX instead. The ASRock A520M-ITX/AC shows the other side of the coin: a Mini ITX board on a budget AMD chipset, where the small size costs you features rather than saving you money.

A note on listed dimensions

Do not size your case from a retail listing’s dimension field. Those numbers are frequently the shipping carton, and sometimes they are simply wrong. Several motherboard listings in this catalog carry dimension figures that no board of that class could have, including one Mini ITX board listed at a thickness and width that would not hold a memory slot. The published board dimensions are on the manufacturer’s product page, and the case dimensions are on the case manufacturer’s page. Use those two sources and ignore the rest.

Choosing a size

Pick ATX if you want a second expansion card at any point, four memory slots, more than two NVMe drives, or the easiest possible build with the most room around the socket. It is the default for a reason.

Pick Micro ATX if you want most of that in a smaller case and are comfortable with one or two expansion slots. It is the quiet middle option, and for a standard desktop it usually gives up the least for what it saves.

Pick Mini ITX only if the physical size of the finished machine is a real requirement, not a preference. It works well, but every part choice afterward is constrained by it, and the cooler and power supply options narrow sharply. If the goal is simply a small computer rather than a small build project, a compact prebuilt may reach the same place with less friction.
