Two numbers dominate graphics tablet listings and only one of them will change your work. Pressure levels are printed in the title of nearly every model; active area is usually buried, and it decides how the pen feels from the first minute. Here is what each specification actually controls, and how to tell whether you need a tablet with a screen in it.
Pressure levels: the number that stopped mattering
Pressure sensitivity is the count of discrete steps the tablet can report between the lightest touch it registers and full pressure. When these devices reported 512 or 1024 steps, you could see the stepping in a slow gradient stroke. Current models are quoted far higher: XP-PEN lists 8192 levels on the StarG640 and HUION lists 8192 on the Inspiroy H640P. At that resolution the steps are far finer than a hand can control or a screen can display, so a jump from 8192 to a larger figure is not something you will see in a drawing.
Three related things do matter and are rarely printed. The first is initial activation force, meaning how lightly you can press before the pen makes a mark at all; a high activation force makes fine hatching hard. The second is the pressure curve, which is adjustable in most driver software and changes how quickly a line thickens under pressure. The third is whether your application supports pressure on your operating system, which is a software question rather than a hardware one.
Note also that not every listing states the figure. The HUION Inspiroy H950P is described only as a bundle with a PW100 battery free stylus, and the Wacom Intuos Small listing gives no pressure figure at all. Where a listing is silent, the manufacturer’s own product page is the place to check rather than assuming parity with a competitor.
Active area is the specification to read first
Active area is the part of the tablet surface that maps to your screen. It is not the same as the physical dimensions of the device, which include a bezel and often a row of buttons. Both the StarG640 and the Inspiroy H640P are described as 6 by 4 inch tablets, while the H640P’s listed body measures 10 by 5.98 inches, so the drawing region is a portion of what sits on your desk.
The mapping is what makes this matter. In normal absolute mode, the whole active area corresponds to the whole screen, so on a small tablet a short wrist movement crosses the entire display. That is precise and fatigue friendly for retouching and interface work, and cramped for long confident strokes, which want more arm travel. Choose small for photo editing, annotation and general pointing; choose larger if you draw from the elbow.
Aspect ratio is the trap underneath. A 6 by 4 tablet is 3:2 and your monitor is probably 16:9, so the driver has to either stretch the mapping or leave part of the tablet unused. On a 21:9 display the mismatch is bigger still. If you work on something like the LG 34WP65C-B, which LG lists at 3440 by 1440 across 34 inches, plan on restricting the mapping to one region of the screen rather than fighting a distorted pen.

The indirect setup sounds harder than it is. Your hand moves on the tablet while your eyes stay on the monitor, and for most people the mapping becomes automatic within a few hours because it is the same skill a mouse requires. The people who genuinely struggle with it tend to be those doing precise line art, where watching the nib meet the line matters.
That is the case for a pen display. HUION describes the KAMVAS Pro 16 as a 15.6 inch pen display with anti glare glass, six shortcut keys and an adjustable stand, working with Windows, Mac and Linux. The practical costs are worth stating: a pen display needs a video connection, a data connection and power rather than one USB cable, it occupies the desk space a monitor would, and drawing on a screen with your hand resting on it means heat and fingerprints. Anti glare etching, as named on the Kamvas listing, addresses reflections from room lighting that a plain glossy panel would throw straight back at you.
The third route skips the computer. A tablet computer such as the Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Lite ships with its own pen and runs drawing apps directly, which is a genuinely different workflow rather than a cheaper version of the same one. It travels, it needs no host machine, and it limits you to the software available for that platform.
The parts of the pen and tablet that quietly matter
- Battery free stylus. The tablet powers the pen through the surface, so there is nothing to charge and nothing to replace. Both the StarG640 and the H950P are listed with battery free styluses, and the H950P names the PW100 specifically.
- Shortcut keys. The H640P lists six hot keys and the Wacom Intuos Small lists four customizable ExpressKeys. These save reaching for the keyboard mid stroke, and four is usually enough for undo, brush size and a modifier or two.
- Platform support. Wacom describes the Intuos as working with Mac, PC, Chromebook and select Android devices, which is broader than most. Check this before you assume a tablet works with a Chromebook or a phone.
- Nibs. Pen nibs wear down with use and are consumable. Spares usually ship in the box or the stand.
Getting the desk right
Whichever type you choose, the monitor is half the setup. A panel you can raise, tilt and pivot lets you match the screen height to a comfortable pen posture rather than hunching to the screen; Dell describes the P2219H as an IPS panel supporting 178 degree horizontal and vertical viewing angles that can be tilted, swiveled, pivoted and height adjusted, with HDMI, DisplayPort and VGA inputs. Wide viewing angles matter more than usual here, because you spend a lot of time looking at the display from an angle while your hand works below it.
