A laptop processor name carries three separate pieces of information, and most buyers only read one of them. The brand tier tells you where the chip sits in the lineup. The generation number tells you how old the design is. The letter on the end tells you the power budget, and that letter usually matters more than the tier does. A low power chip with a high tier badge can be slower under sustained load than a mid tier chip with a bigger thermal envelope.
The tiers, briefly
Intel currently runs two naming schemes side by side. The older Core i3, i5, i7 and i9 ladder still appears across new listings, while newer designs use Core Ultra 5, Ultra 7 and Ultra 9. Below both sits the entry range, where Celeron, Pentium and the newer Intel N series live. AMD uses Ryzen 3, 5, 7 and 9, with a four digit model number whose first digit is a model year rather than an architecture generation, which is a well known source of confusion.
Generation matters as much as tier. A four year old i7 and a current i5 can land in the same place, because per core gains and efficiency improvements accumulate across generations. Reading the tier without the generation number is how people end up paying more for less. The tier number sets expectations for core count and cache, not for speed under load. The Dell Latitude 3550 lists a Core Ultra 5 135U with 12 cores, 14 threads and up to 4.3 GHz turbo, in the same 15.6 inch body class as machines carrying far weaker chips. Compare that with the HP 15 inch built around the Celeron N4120, listed at four cores, four threads and up to 2.6 GHz. Both are 15 inch Windows laptops. They are not in the same category of machine.

U and G: the thin and light chips
U class parts dominate business and mainstream laptops because they fit a thin chassis and a small cooler. The Lenovo ThinkPad E16 Gen 2 lists a Ryzen 5 7535U rated up to 4.55 GHz, and the Acer Aspire 3 lists a Ryzen 5 7430U at up to 4.5 GHz. Those turbo figures are short duration ceilings. In a thin chassis, sustained clocks sit well below them once the cooler saturates, which is why two laptops with the same chip can behave differently.
Intel added a graphics suffix during the 11th generation era. The Dell Latitude 5420 lists an i5-1145G7, where the G7 indicates the higher Iris Xe graphics tier rather than a faster processor. Both the G7 designation and the U designation describe the same class of low power chip.
H and HX: the chips that need a fan
Gaming and workstation laptops move up to H and HX parts. The ASUS ROG Zephyrus G16 listing pairs an i7-13620H with an RTX 4070, while the ASUS ROG Strix G16 listing specifies an i9-13980HX, described as 24 cores and 32 threads with a 2.20 GHz base and up to 5.60 GHz boost. HX silicon is essentially a desktop die in a laptop socket, which is why those machines are thick, heavy and loud under load. The tradeoff is real work per watt hour of battery, and it goes the wrong way.
N series and the entry range
The Intel N series replaced the old Celeron and Pentium mobile names. The HP Essential 17t lists a Core i3-N305 with 8 cores, 8 threads, 6 MB of cache and a 0.8 GHz base rising to 3.8 GHz. Despite the i3 badge, this is an efficiency core design without the performance cores found in mainstream i3 parts. It is a genuine step up from a Celeron N4120 or the Celeron N4500 in the Lenovo IdeaPad, and a genuine step down from any U class chip.
Chromebooks add another naming family entirely. The Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3 Chromebook is listed with a MediaTek Kompanio 520, an Arm design where Intel and AMD tier logic does not apply. Worth noting that the same listing also reports the processor as an MT8183 in its specification block, which is a different part number from the Kompanio 520 named in the title. When a listing contradicts itself like that, treat the headline claim as unconfirmed.
Desktop suffixes, because they leak into laptop shopping
Small desktops and mini PCs sit next to laptops in most buying decisions, and their suffixes follow different rules. F means no integrated graphics, so the machine will not display anything without a discrete card. The HP Pavilion TG01 listing is a useful warning here: it names an i7-11700F, which has no integrated graphics, while the same listing describes the graphics as integrated and separately names a GeForce GT 610. Those three statements cannot all be true, and the listing does not resolve which one is right.
K means an unlocked multiplier for overclocking, as on the AMD A10-6800K. A plain desktop part with no suffix, such as the Intel Core i7-14700, runs at stock multipliers with integrated graphics present. AMD uses X to mark higher clocked desktop parts, as on the Ryzen 5 7600X.
How to read a listing in thirty seconds
Find the full model string, not the tier. Read the last letters. If it ends in U or G, expect a thin machine with quiet fans and modest sustained performance. If it ends in H or HX, expect weight, heat and a shorter time away from a wall socket. If it starts with N, or reads Celeron or Pentium, expect a machine for browsing and documents and nothing heavier.
Core counts deserve the same skepticism. Modern Intel chips mix performance cores with efficiency cores, so a headline figure of 12 cores may describe two performance cores and ten efficiency cores. Then check the base clock, not the turbo. Turbo figures are ceilings that a thin chassis may hold for seconds. A base clock of 0.8 GHz and a turbo of 3.8 GHz describes a very different machine from a base clock of 2.6 GHz with the same ceiling. If the listing omits the base clock entirely, that omission is itself information.
