Monitor speakers are not bad engineering. They are a small driver in almost no enclosure, driven by a small amplifier, doing a job that has hard physical limits. Understanding those limits tells you exactly when the built in audio is enough and when it is not, and it also explains the one specification that catches people out when they buy replacements: whether a speaker has an amplifier inside it or expects you to supply one.
Why built in monitor audio sounds the way it does
Low frequency output is a function of how much air a driver can move, which comes down to cone area multiplied by how far it travels, backed by enclosure volume. A monitor gives you almost none of any of those. The drivers are small, the cabinet is whatever space is left behind the panel, and they usually fire backward or downward into the desk rather than at your ears. The amplifier is sized to match, which is why manufacturers quote small numbers when they quote any at all.
Some monitors do the job properly for their intended use. Dell describes dual 5 watt integrated speakers on the C3422WE, alongside a 5 MP infrared camera and a noise cancelling microphone, because that panel is built as a video conferencing device where speech intelligibility is the requirement. LG lists a built in speaker on the 34WP65C-B, which is enough for notifications and video without a second box on the desk.
Plenty of monitors have no speakers at all, and their listings simply do not mention audio. The Dell E2423H listing gives no speaker specification, and the AOC Q27G3XMN listing details the panel, the 180 Hz refresh rate and its single HDMI 2.0 and DisplayPort 1.4 inputs without naming audio output. Gaming monitors in particular often omit speakers to spend the budget on the panel. Absence of a speaker specification is not proof that speakers are missing, but it is a strong hint, and it is worth resolving before the box arrives.
One practical note: monitor speakers are fed by the audio embedded in an HDMI or DisplayPort signal, so the monitor appears as a separate output device in your operating system. If a monitor with speakers is silent, the usual cause is that the computer is still sending audio somewhere else rather than a fault.
Powered and passive, and why the difference is not optional
A powered speaker, also called active, has its amplifier built into the cabinet. You give it a signal and a power outlet and it plays. A passive speaker has no amplifier at all; it needs speaker wire from an external amplifier or receiver, and it will do nothing whatsoever plugged into a headphone jack.
Nearly everything sold as a desktop speaker is powered, which is why the distinction goes unnoticed until it bites. The KEF Ci160ER is a useful illustration of the exception. KEF describes it as part of an architectural series built around the company’s Uni-Q driver, which places the tweeter at the center of the mid range cone so the two behave as one point source. It is an installation speaker designed to be, in KEF’s phrase, heard but not seen, and it is passive: it needs an amplifier that you buy separately. It also currently sits in this site’s computer speaker category, which is a poor fit for an in wall design, and its listing carries a control method field naming push buttons and a remote, which a passive speaker does not have.
The four ways to get sound at a desk

What the input type changes
How the signal reaches a powered speaker matters more than most people expect.
- Analog 3.5 mm. Your computer’s own audio circuitry does the conversion. It works with anything, and it is the connection most likely to pick up hum or a faint whine that tracks with what the computer is doing.
- USB. The conversion happens inside the speaker, which sidesteps the computer’s analog output and the ground path that causes that noise. Creative lists USB-C audio on the Pebble V3 with a USB-A converter in the box, and Dell describes an integrated amplifier on the AX210 with both 3.5 mm and USB in the box.
- Bluetooth. Convenient and wireless, with latency that is fine for music and can be visible as lip sync drift on video. Both the Pebble V3 and the Mackie CR2-X Cube list Bluetooth alongside wired inputs, which is the sensible arrangement: wireless when it suits, cable when it matters.
Power ratings need reading carefully too. Creative quotes 8 watts RMS and 16 watts peak on the Pebble V3, which are two different measurements: RMS is continuous output and peak is a brief maximum. Comparing one product’s peak figure against another’s RMS figure makes the second look weaker than it is. Dell quotes a total output of 1.2 watts on the AX210, which is a genuinely small figure and consistent with a compact speaker aimed at desktop listening rather than filling a room.
The AX210 listing is also a good reminder to sanity check imported fields: it reports dimensions of roughly 18 inches on every side, a speaker size of 47.8 centimeters and five hours of battery life, none of which can be right for a USB powered desktop speaker.
Expansion, and the job speakers do not do
If you expect to add low end later, buy for that at the start. Mackie describes a subwoofer output on the CR2-X Cube that optimizes the system for a matching CR6S-X or another sub, plus a headphone output and touch volume control. A speaker without a sub output can still be paired with a subwoofer, but it usually means splitting the signal upstream rather than a clean handoff.
Placement is free and does more than an upgrade. Get the tweeters near ear height, angle them toward your listening position, keep the pair symmetrical relative to the walls, and lift them off the desk surface if you can, because a hard desktop reflects sound back at you a fraction of a second late.
Finally, speakers are the wrong tool for calls in a shared space, because an open microphone in the same room as an open speaker is a feedback problem. That is what dedicated conferencing hardware solves: Jabra describes four beamforming noise cancelling microphones and full duplex operation on the Speak2 55, which is a different device class from desktop speakers even though both make sound.
